Mirissa was popular tourist destination in sri lanka over 30 years because of its quite beach,fishing was the main job of villagers and old villagers had seen blue whales over the decades while they were fishing but never knew this could be the greatest attraction one day in mirissa.
Double Decker Tri Maran
whale watching started nearly 2005-2006 with old small fishing boats with out any facilities and now it has developed with using big double decker tri-maran which can accommodate 100 pax with all necessary facilities.
Season Time
Mirissa is absolutely unique Place to spot blue whales each day of the year.However majority of passengers visit south province from october to april. that period normally consider as tourist season. beaches are getting wide & sea is very calm.after may second week monsoon season(rainy season) started & sea is getting rough and prevails until September, meantime some operators conduct whale watching tours even in july,august,september months if the whether is normal.
Type of Whales & dolphins
Most of the days Blue Whales are spotted just 5-10 nautical Miles away from the shore.only 2-3 blue whales are spotted in one spot,although they are living as group. actually they are living as a pod but with the size of blue whales and size of ocean it’s impossible observe within short time.once we are witnessed more than fifty blue whales just half an hour away from shore.
not only blue whales but most of the mornings hundreds of spinner dolphins are feeding.During the season, sightings are unpredictable & sperm whales,Bryde’s whales,Fin Whales,Pilot whales,Killer Whales are spotted in mirissa area while they migrate from north-west.also a large pod of bottle-nose,risso’s,striped dolphins can be found in the tour.
During the Tour
you have to book a seat early in order to take part whale watching tour,once you arrived to the mirissa harbor you will be assisted by operator to get in to the boat,you have to fill the little form before you enter the boat for safety reason.before tour started you will offer by tea or coffee & breakfast pack(sandwiches or egg bun with piece of cake and fruits).
tour time may depends as observation area is quite big,most of the days with in one hour after tour started dolphins or blue whales are spotted.but some days it may take 2-3 hours to spot them.
